Arrangements for Trump-Putin Meeting Delayed Shortly Following Budapest Talks Announced
Currently exist "no preparations" for American leader Donald Trump to confer with Russian President Putin "in the near term", a White House official has announced.
Recently Trump said he and the Russian president would conduct negotiations in Hungary's capital in the coming fortnight to discuss the war in Ukraine.
A initial discussion between America's top diplomat Secretary Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was scheduled to occur this week - but the administration stated the two had had a "constructive" discussion and that a face-to-face session was no longer "needed".
The White House did not share further information on why the talks had been put on hold.
Earlier Events
The US president had discussed a Budapest summit over the phone with Putin, a just prior to meeting Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House.
Certain accounts claimed his talks with Zelensky had been a "contentious discussion", with insiders claiming Trump had pressured him to relinquish significant territories of eastern Ukraine as part of a agreement with Russia.
Nevertheless, on Monday the American president embraced a truce plan supported by Kyiv and European leaders to freeze the war on the current front line.
"Let it be cut the way it is," he remarked.
Russia has repeatedly pushed back against pausing the existing front lines.
Moscow was only interested in "long-term, sustainable peace", Russia's foreign minister said on Tuesday, indicating that halting hostilities would only amount to a temporary ceasefire.
Negotiating Stances
The "root causes" of the conflict demanded attention, the Russian diplomat stated, using Moscow's terminology for a set of extensive requirements that encompass the acknowledgment of complete Moscow control over the eastern region as well as the disarmament of the country – a unacceptable proposition for Kyiv and its European partners.
The Ukrainian president said talks regarding the front line were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Russia was "doing everything" to avoid diplomacy.
He also said the only topic that could cause Russia to "become engaged" was that of the supply of distance-capable munitions to the Ukrainian military.
Military Considerations
The Russian president's spontaneous discussion with Trump recently came ahead of rumors that the US was considering delivering distance-capable weapons to Ukrainian forces that could possibly hit deep into Russia.
The Ukrainian leader stated it was the missile discussion that had pressured the Kremlin to engage in discussion. The discussion regarding the weapons systems had proven to be a "valuable contribution" in international relations", he added.
