Arsenal's Manager Admits Future Stay Is Tied to Winning Major Honors.
On the eve of his half-decade plus one year as manager, Mikel Arteta has admitted that his continued role with the club is fundamentally dependent to delivering trophies.
Reflecting on: From Appointment to Present
The Spanish coach took over on 20 December 2019 and managed to steer the team to an FA Cup triumph a short time later. But, that initial silverware remains his lone significant piece of silverware following the departure of Unai Emery.
“I can,” he stated when questioned about remaining in charge after his current deal. “Yet it's about today. And many things have to happen in the near future as well to deserve that opportunity.”
Saturday night brings the landmark with a game facing Everton, the identical team Arsenal met just after his role was made public.
The Current Landscape
Given that trailing Manchester City taking on West Ham on Saturday afternoon, Arsenal face being knocked off first place in the Premier League prior to their fixture. This comes even with Arteta overseeing a squad that has been plagued by more than a century of fitness issues since the start of last season.
Arteta is tied down by 18 months remaining on the deal he signed in 2024, yet understands fully that results must come sooner rather than later.
The Manager's Mandate
Arteta elaborated, highlighting the constant necessity to justify his role. “In my view a manager needs to warrant the right to be here tomorrow. And that is determined by how you react, how you communicate, how you go into the dressing room, the signal you send.”
He stated further, praising the consistent faith from the hierarchy, while singling out the players' commitment as the key factor. “Ultimately, the most important ones are those players... For six years, I’ve seen just players with a level of attention, desire to learn and give the maximum to the team.”
Latest Fitness Blow
The team faces the upcoming game managing a fresh setback. Defender Ben White has been ruled out with a hamstring injury that is expected to see him miss action for a few weeks.
A Different Club
Regardless of the fitness woes and the intense pressure, Arteta feels the club's “objectives and communication” are vastly different from when he initially took over.
Arteta highlighted the record-breaking achievements as a sign they are nearing their goal. “Consider the performances, all the historical marks we surpassed... We still haven't been able to do that [win trophies]. But that tells you the caliber we've reached.”
He finished by saying, “This is a standard that the Premier League has never experienced in the past. And our ambition is to achieve more lofty ambitions. And if we do that, I think we are on the right path to winning.”
