Gavin Newsom, a leading member of the Democratic party, has indicated that he intends to decide on whether to run for president in 2028 following the 2026 midterm elections are over.

"Yeah, it would be dishonest if I said no," Newsom stated when asked about giving serious thought to a presidential run following the 2026 midterms. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I'm not."

The governor's time in office as governor ends in the start of 2027, and term limits prevent another run. But, he cautioned that any decision is not imminent.

"It's up to destiny," he added.

Growing Prominence as a Trump Critic

He has stepped forward as a prominent adversary of the Trump administration, using his social media accounts and advocating for a ballot measure that would boost the party's representation in Congress in response to Republican redistricting efforts. This strategy has drawn criticism from political opponents.

Clash on Transportation

Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, accused that the governor shows no concern about Californians in a weekend appearance on Fox News. The secretary revealed plans to cut government money from the state and warned revoking the power to provide trucking licenses.

"I plan to withdraw a significant sum from California," he stated, after a recent tragic collision in California involving an undocumented commercial driver that resulted in three deaths and injured individuals.

The governor's team pointed out that the U.S. government had renewed the worker's status repeatedly, which permitted him to obtain a commercial driver's license under U.S. law.

Duffy had previously announced he was withholding $40m from California for failing to implement language proficiency rules for CDL holders.
