Gavin Newsom Acknowledges He Is Considering a Presidential Campaign for 2028

Gavin Newsom, a leading member of the Democratic party, has indicated that he intends to decide on whether to run for president in 2028 following the 2026 midterm elections are over.

"Yeah, it would be dishonest if I said no," Newsom stated when asked about giving serious thought to a presidential run following the 2026 midterms. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I'm not."

The governor's time in office as governor ends in the start of 2027, and term limits prevent another run. But, he cautioned that any decision is not imminent.

"It's up to destiny," he added.

Growing Prominence as a Trump Critic

He has stepped forward as a prominent adversary of the Trump administration, using his social media accounts and advocating for a ballot measure that would boost the party's representation in Congress in response to Republican redistricting efforts. This strategy has drawn criticism from political opponents.

Clash on Transportation

Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, accused that the governor shows no concern about Californians in a weekend appearance on Fox News. The secretary revealed plans to cut government money from the state and warned revoking the power to provide trucking licenses.

"I plan to withdraw a significant sum from California," he stated, after a recent tragic collision in California involving an undocumented commercial driver that resulted in three deaths and injured individuals.

The governor's team pointed out that the U.S. government had renewed the worker's status repeatedly, which permitted him to obtain a commercial driver's license under U.S. law.

Duffy had previously announced he was withholding $40m from California for failing to implement language proficiency rules for CDL holders.

Pointed Reply from the Administration

"Former D-list reality star, now cabinet member, fails to grasp U.S. regulations," his administration responded in a previous statement responding to the funding warnings. "Meanwhile, unlike this clown, we rely on data: The state's truck drivers had a fatal crash rate significantly lower than the U.S. average. Texas – the single state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate substantially higher than California. Data speaks for itself. The Trump administration does."

Voter Sentiment and Political Future

A recent survey found that a majority of the party and 48% of all registered voters believed that the governor should run for the White House in 2028. In recent years, Newsom's favorability has risen to an typical level of a third from around 30%, while his unfavorability has decreased from an typical level of over 40% to under 40%.

Some time ago, the governor commented while on a trip several battleground states that he had "no clue" about his intentions for the next presidential election.

He noted his personal struggles, including being identified as dyslexic at the young age of five.

"The notion that a individual who got 960 on his SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was often seated at the back – the idea that you would even throw that out is, in and of itself, extraordinary," he stated. "Who the hell knows? I'm looking forward to who steps forward in the next election and who rises to the occasion. And that's the question for the U.S. citizens."
