Israelis mark two-year anniversary of 7 October incident as Palestinian ceasefire negotiations advance
Citizens have assembled across the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-conducted attack on 7 October 2023, as talks advanced in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the conflict in Gaza.
The incident resulted in in excess of 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely most lethal day for Jews since the Second World War.
Israel reacted by beginning a military offensive in Gaza which has taken in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are considered reliable by the United Nations and other international bodies.
"Our aggressive opponents have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," the prime minister remarked on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "realize all the objectives of the war: the return of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will never again pose a threat to Israel".
Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel
The national leadership rescheduled state remembrance events until mid-October - after the completion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still were held across the country on that day.
A commemorative event for the loved ones of Israelis who died in the Hamas attack was conducted in Tel Aviv. Organized by the affected families, it was broadcast throughout Israeli broadcast stations.
A period earlier, a silent tribute was held around the country.
Peace Meetings in Egypt
Simultaneously, Israeli and Hamas representatives met in the North African Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of indirect talks to review the provisions of the plan.
A prominent delegate familiar with the negotiations revealed that an night meeting of indirect talks started at 7 PM local time.
The official stated the earlier meeting concluded without significant progress, amid conflicting views over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not restart fighting after the first phase of the arrangement.
He added that the talks are "challenging and have not yet produce any significant progress," but mentioned that intermediaries are making efforts to close the gaps between the conflicting groups.
Key Matters in Negotiations
- A permanent ceasefire
- The swap of the captives still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The removal of military personnel from Gaza
- Measures for humanitarian aid provision
- After-conflict administration of the area
Public Reaction
In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square earlier, 29-year-old a woman - whose brother survived the incident on the outdoor event, where hundreds were lost their lives and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - told: "Nowhere seems like home anymore and until all the hostages return no one will be secure."
"After we see all home once more, we can breathe once more. Then we can commence rebuild," she concluded.
In front of the leader's official dwelling in the capital, people gathered to show their backing for the families of the captives. Israel states 48 remain in confinement in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be surviving.
Demonstrator one woman stated: "It's necessary do any agreement required for the abducted to be released. But we sincerely need promises that we will be safe."
Surveys now consistently show that around 70% of Israeli citizens want the conflict to conclude in exchange for the freedom of the hostages.
Palestinian Situation
At the site of Nova festival, mourners gathered to pay their respects.
From that location, the boom of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers indicated the intense Israeli bombardment continued.
In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were documented in the dawn of that day in the west side neighborhood, sector and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the eastern area of that sector, as well the camp to the northwestern area.
"When the evening falls, the anxiety comes with it," evacuated urban resident a local woman, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli air strike previously, described.
"My family are fearful of the bombings. During nighttime we are sleeping together, holding each other, notably my little child who places his head on me all night."
"Every second we monitor the reports to see what happened. And I'm afraid that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the fighting will come back to us."
Medical Crisis
Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City announced it had accepted the remains of six people by the daytime, including several who died in an Israeli bombing in the south part area.
Another medical facility in the south region of the city said additional victims had been brought there. A person was lost his life by Israeli troops while attempting to get aid to the southern area, health workers reported.
