Our Dominik Diamond Unofficial Gaming of the Year List for This Year
So, what did you think of the past year in your family? Was it truly wonderful as you pretended on social media? Overflowing with A-grades for the children and elaborate costume celebrations for the adults? Or was it a sea of disappointment with only sporadic enjoyable moments? And was any of it actually real, or are we all digitally altered AI slop beings with perfect dental work?
I've corralled my thoughts together, whether they wanted to or not, to discuss the most important thing in any given year: what titles we played the most. Let's get started:
Game First Daughter Played the Most
Just Dance 2024
"Is it impossible to pick just one?"
"It’s not my games column."
On her phone, she’s been playing Cityscapes and "trying to find decent healthcare."
"In the game?"
"In reality."
Title Middle Son Played the Most
Overwatch
"I have no interest in games on my phone." He seemed insulted that I even asked. Point taken.
Game Third Daughter Played the Most
Resident Evil Biohazard
Her goal is to get into drama school, but when she took a break from vocals, she was immersed in Resident Evil. She also spoke at length in great detail about her successes on The Sims, where her character has a thriving utopia with significantly better healthcare than her older sibling has in real life.
Release the Partner Played the Most
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She began the year at 60% completion and finished the year at 82%. She's in it for the long run not a sprint for her. Her mobile diversion: something called Woodle, where you have to remove pins.
Title I Laughed at My Kids for Still Playing
Minecraft
Whenever I see my adult son playing Minecraft, I rib him like a cross between a persistent critic. When he complains, I reply that I am engaging in this to toughen him up so he can be a man and play games for adults. It’s a very Scottish father/son relationship.
Most Notable Gaming Family Member This Year
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
She was the clear winner for this one. She is a machine. More impressive than I was at classic rhythm games in my prime.
Game I Played the Most
Marvel Snap
It was in a league of its own to the hours I spent on this exceptionally well-crafted deck building wizard’s poker, with its ever-changing range of cards and game variations.
Title I Wish I Had Played Less
Marvel Snap
The catch about games that frequently update their range is you eventually realize and see it is all just an attempt to lure you into fear-of-missing-out driven microtransactions. So love turned to hate halfway through the year and it got uninstalled.
Title I Wish I Had Played More
Doom: The Dark Ages
Glorious reinvention of a iconic franchise. Immersive atmosphere from the start. I wish I could dispatch my problems so effectively in real life.
Game I Wish I Had Played More (Thoughtful Edition)
Blue Prince
I refuse to rush this gorgeous, distinctive game and I just lacked the mental bandwidth to give it what it deserved earlier this year. With relatives staying over the festive period, I plan to dive into this in the early morning after family time.
Game That Saved My Soul When I Needed It
Balatro
I acknowledge Balatro was last year's breakout game, but I was slow on the uptake. And it is exceptional. It just gets every single thing right. The core concept is a wonderful concept, but the effects behind the different wild cards are so imaginative it has become a game I could play constantly. Combine that with the cleverness of the card design, and this is an absolute peak of gaming. I fantasize about being stuck in a small space for hours just so I have nothing to do but play it.
Game I Got the Most Criticism For Criticising
Outer Worlds 2
I received a minor pile-on when I critiqued how a specific bug in another game damaged the experience for me, but that other title is still a gargantuan gaming achievement in terms of overall polish – which I appreciated even more after playing Outer Worlds 2. So thank you to the individual who took the time to contact me to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "bitter, confused resentment". I share that as written, because I appreciate the effort, and he is obviously an excellent judge of character.
Game Everybody Loved That I Just Didn’t Get
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Alright. Give me a punishingly tough non-linear thing and leave me without guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "explore". Great fun. I acknowledge that it is beautiful and is ideal if you are into challenging games, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I want less of in my current stage of life. I was around back when all games were like this, and my patience is gone. It was fine when I was a kid, but so was many less comfortable things.
Biggest Gaming News of 2025
Debate between corporate partnerships that caused concern, and premium pricing. Both difficult to justify and concerning.
Games I Would Name My Children After, Were I I Was Ever Stupid Enough to Have More
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all sound good names shouted from the garden at tea time.
Part of My Body That Aches Most From Gaming
Right Thumb Joint. Seriously. I don’t know if it’s because of video games or doomscrolling, but it is sore like hellfire in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs insured back in the past.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to wait patiently until the heat death of the universe.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2036
The Witcher 4.
