Arrangements to hold Pride-focused celebrations in Seattle during next summer’s World Cup are proceeding as scheduled, even after the Egyptian and Iranian soccer associations raised strong concerns about a planned “Pride Match.”

Venue Regulations Alongside External Festivities

Local organizers have confirmed they are “moving forward as planned” with celebratory programming in the city center. This coincides with the Group G match featuring Iran and Egypt on 26 June. Additionally, the tournament's governing body has a policy allowing Pride flags inside the stadium.

“As the local organising committee, our primary task is to get the city ready to host the matches and manage the city experience outside of Seattle Stadium,” said a committee representative.

Cultural Background Behind the Objections

Same-sex relations are criminalized under Iranian law, and in Egypt, morality laws are often used to prosecute LGBTQ+ people. Egypt's football association stated it refused to be associated with celebrations that “directly contradict the social, religious and cultural values … in Arab and Islamic societies.” In a parallel move, Iran’s football federation also raised “its opposition against the issue.”

FIFA's Stance on Symbols

Fifa maintains operational control over match venues during games. While it prohibits banners and flags with overtly political content, it allows flags expressing “sporting and social symbols,” which explicitly includes the Pride flag. This policy was applied at the most recent World Cup in Qatar and was reaffirmed following reports of authorities confiscating flags.
