The ice cream brand's Co-Founder States Parent Company Prevented Pro-Palestinian Ice Cream Product
One of the original creators of the well-known ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has announced how parent company the multinational conglomerate prevented the launch for a new pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, that established the company with his partner, disclosed how he plans to personally create this new flavor as part of a personal series highlighting causes the company was barred from addressing publicly.
Longstanding Conflict Between Creators versus Corporate Owner
This latest announcement intensifies the continuing tension among the internationally recognized ice cream maker with Unilever, the British consumer goods corporation that has owned the ice cream brand for over two decades.
The co-founders have asserted that Unilever and its ice cream arm Magnum improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
Watermelon Sorbet as a Symbol of Support
The entrepreneur revealed via social media that he's developing a new watermelon-flavored sorbet, asking for public suggestions regarding the product's name plus additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen declared in his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that calls for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians while demanding addressing the harm that was done there.”
This particular fruit has become an emblem for support for Palestinians because of its coloration, that match the colors in Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Previous Activism plus Recent Developments
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of its products in areas under Israeli control, resulting in the parent company transferring the Israeli operation over to a local licensee, thus allowing continued sales in the occupied West Bank.
The new dessert series will be developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist dessert company which was first established several years back to support ex- political contender Senator Sanders via the product "Bernie's Back".
Leadership Shifts plus Future Intentions
Mr. Cohen indicated how he plans to create other frozen dessert varieties that address concerns that Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking about openly due to Unilever.
This development follows co-founder Jerry Greenfield resigned from the company in September, after many years of involvement, mentioning concerns that its independence was compromised following Unilever's decision to curb its social activism.
At that time, Ben Cohen remarked how "Jerry has a really big heart and this conflict with our parent company was breaking it."
“My conscience compels me to continue to work within the organization to fight for its independence ensuring that the company can fulfill its ethical purpose, the values that it was founded on while upholding for decades," he told media outlets.
